The first annual $8,000 added KC Sandcastle Bakken Barrel Daze barrel racing competition was held at the Richland County Fairgrounds June 24. Paying out $20,800 with 300-plus runs, Bakken Barrel Daze was the largest one-day barrel racing event in the region.

Rain followed by sunshine made for a beautiful day for the entrants who came from North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana and Canada. Dana Penrod on Major Guy finished in 17.27 seconds on the standard pattern in the Chaznline Challenge $2,000 added 4D race. She pocketed $1,531 by winning both the $4,700 added open 5D and 4D along with a gorgeous pair of custom spurs donated by Cliff Dahl.
Alexis Shipp won the Ridge Line Contractors $800 added youth race. Ashley Ouzts and KTS Scrap Iron continued their winning ways as they won the WPRA $250 added side pot. Vicki Gilje on IMA Bay Gourmet won the senior $250 added race.
