Barrel racers wanted to get out of the house after the COVID-19 shutdowns. Most races saw an increase in entries and prize money despite government regulations and rescheduling. As a whole, barrel races using the divisional format awarded more than $17.2 million, an increase of more than $2.8 million from 2019. Youth races using the divisional format were just under $2 million, while senior races accounted for more than $422,000. Closed events—those only open to the eligible offspring of enrolled stallions—used by the breeding incentives accounted for $3.1 million, or 18 percent of all divisional purses.
