Daughters of Marthas Six Moons, the leading sire of barrel horses in 2000, produced 19 money earners of $189,916 in 2008, making him the leading maternal grandsire for the year.

Marthas Six Moons, a 1984 stallion by Six Fols and out of Lady Bugs Martha by Lady Bugs Moon, lives at Berndt and Shannon Akerstrom’s Western 37 Barrel Horses in Patter Valley, California.

“I hate to call him sterile because he still has some swimmers,” said Shannon Akerstrom of the 25-year-old legend. “ It’s just that it’s about seven or eight out of billions.”

The grand old stallion is living out his days in the company of a mare. Though she’s often hoped, Akerstrom has never found the mare in foal.

Marthas Six Moons last foal crop hit the ground in 2004, and he still ranks No. 17 on the Leading Sire’s chart.

His leading daughter was Bunnys Six Moons, a 1996 mare out of Faster Bunny by Bunnys Bar Boy. She produced leading futurity horse Six Moon Firewater, a 2004 gelding by Fire Water Flit, and Teddy Bear Bandit, a 2001 gelding by Flit Bar Bandit. Bunnys Six Moons is No. 2 on the Leading Dams list and currently resides in Brazil.

The Flit Bar-Marthas Six Moons cross was exceptionally powerful in 2008 with Lindsay Sears’ WPRA World Champion Sugar Moon Express (“Martha”) carrying the same blood. Martha is by Dr Nick Bar, a son of Flit Bar, and out of Babys Blue Jeans, a full sister to Marthas Six Moons.
