The first annual $8,000 added KC Sandcastle Bakken Barrel Daze barrel racing competition was held at the Richland County Fairgrounds June 24. Paying out $20,800 with 300-plus runs, Bakken Barrel Daze was the largest one-day barrel racing event in the region.

Certain things are made to go together, perfect duos so to speak, like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck — like Kelly Yates and winning. However, the Friday afternoon before Yates was supposed to hit the trail to begin a summer run with her trusty steed and 2011 AQHA Barrel Racing Junior World Champion, Fiesta Del Rey (Fire Water Fiesta x Dual Rey), things took a turn for the worse. After spending a relaxing afternoon frolicking in Yates’ arena, “Whizzard” ended up getting hung up in the cable that encompasses the arena.

The 15TH Annual Cowgirl Tuff Co. Rocky Mountain Super Race returned to Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 5-7, bringing good times and fast runs as many of the region’s best took aim at the $16,995 payout as well as custom trophy buckles by Tres Rios Silver and a bevy of awards, including Classic Equine gear bags and hay bags, Formula 707 gift certificates and more.

Christina Richman swooped in and captured the average by one tenth of a second over Benette Little with a time of 34.50 seconds on two runs at Redding Rodeo, held May 17-19. The 63rd annual event is a part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association Wrangler Million Dollar Silver Tour, where the top cowgirls entered were able to compete for $10,000 added money.

SafariGirlDesigns.com debuted the Runnin’ on the Wild Side barrel race at C Bar C Expo Center in Cloverdale, Indiana, on April 27-29. Just shy of 1,000 entries competed for a share of the more than $35,000 in prize money, Bob Berg buckles, a Target Time saddle, Impact Get pads, Corral boots, Gypsy Tails, Bex sunglasses, and dozens of other prizes.

The 2012 rodeo season has been nothing short of outstanding for past WPRA World Champion Brittany Pozzi. The Victoria, Texas cowgirl added yet another win to her impressive list of achievements when she captured the Red Bluff Round Up barrel racing title aboard Yeah Hes Firen (“Duke”). Part of the 2012 Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, the Silver Tour in Red Bluff, Calif. took place April 20-22 and paid out $201,636 across six events.

Breaking arena records is Fallon Taylor’s new gig. Taylor and her mount, “BabyFlo,” not only set the new arena record at Red Bluff, Calif., but again set the stakes high in Lakeside, Calif., where their blistering 16.94 set a new arena record and netted $1,993 in Lakeside rodeo earnings. The former NFR qualifier of Whitesboro, Texas, is charging her way toward the top 15, currently ranking 22nd with $14,728.
