Armstrong and Matts Freckled Cowboy earned $1,454 and 15 points for their time of 16.338 in the first round. Armstrong is defending her title at the 24th edition of the IFYR as the barrel racing champion. Armstrong took home both the 2014 and the 2015 IFYR barrel racing championships and is, so far, poised for another great year in Shawnee. The Lexington, Oklahoma, cowgirl has been making great waves in the barrel racing industry with two IFYR barrel racing titles, a National Barrel Horse Association Youth World championship in 2014, RFD-TV’s The American semifinals qualifications, a National High School Rodeo Association title, plus numerous others.

Delani Wood, Stanton, Texas, finished in second place in the first go with a 16.387 followed by third place winner, Katelyn Hobbie of Wapanucka, Oklahoma, with a 16.393.

The 24th annual event  will finish with the championship round short go performance Friday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, 1700 W. Independence, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The IFYR is the richest youth rodeo in the world, with more than $200,000 in prize money, championship saddles and buckles up for grabs.

More than 900 contestants from across the United States, Australia and Canada have been competing in 10 events running simultaneously in three arenas throughout the week. Events include barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, goat tying, team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, saddle bronc riding and bareback riding. The IFYR consists of two long go-rounds and a short go. All contestants compete once in each of the long go-rounds. The top 15 averages in each event will compete Friday night in the final short go for fame and prizes.

“The competition is steep at this year’s International Finals Youth Rodeo and the stakes are high,” said Chris Dunlap, Assistant Director of the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center and International Finals Youth Rodeo. “Our contestants have been working incredibly hard all week vying for their chance at the finals. We hope everyone will join us on Friday night, which is sure to deliver plenty of excitement.”
