CODY, Wyo., July 4, 2019 — It only took two days to break a bareback riding record at the 100th anniversary of the Cody Stampede.

Prior to this year, the high-marked ride belonged to Ty Breuer who had a 91-point ride in 2013. Then, Orin Larsen of Inglis, Manitoba had an outstanding 93-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s horse named Make Up Face on Tuesday night at Stampede Park. His record lasted two days.

Caleb Bennett, a seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier from Corvallis, Montana, knew if everything went right, he had a chance to beat Larsen’s score. He came to Stampede Park on July 4th ready to get on Frontier Rodeo’s bucking horse named Gun Fire. He had ridden the horse last year at Spanish Fork, Utah and won the rodeo with an 87-point effort.

Bennett arrived in Cody confident. He just had a big payday when he won the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede. He was hoping the momentum would help, that Gun Fire would have the best trip ever and he could add a Cody Stampede win to his resume. That’s exactly what happened and when the judges added up their scores, Bennett had 93.5 points by his name and is now the arena record holder.

“That horse threw everything at me,” Bennett said. “It was a totally different trip than last time, but it was just outstanding. I’m a little speechless right now. It’s hard to put into words what an arena record really means and then for it to happen at a rodeo with a legacy like this is overwhelming.”

Prior to the Cody Stampede, Bennett was eighth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. With his win here he added $9,842 to his season earnings which should move him up a few places and help him secure his eighth trip to Las Vegas next December for the NFR.

It’s not unusual to find a saddle bronc rider with the name of Wright from Milford, Utah, on the champions list here. In fact, the last three years one of the clan of competitors has won here. Twins Jake and Jesse won here in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Their nephew, Rusty Wright won here in 2018. This year, it was Jake’s turn again, but he had to split the win with Dawson Hay from Wildwood, Alberta who rode on July 3rd.

The twins rode on the Fourth of July. Jake got on Frontier Rodeo’s horse, Big News and scored 89.5 points to match Hay’s score. They each won $7,324.

The big money winners here were team ropers Lane Ivy from Dublin, Texas and Cesar de la Cruz from Tucson, Arizona. They roped on Wednesday and stopped the clock in 4.5 seconds. That held through Thursday’s performance and they each added $10,211 to their earnings.

Parker Breding held his lead in the bull riding from the first performance on Monday night. He rode Summit Pro Rodeo’s bull named Turnabout for 92.5 points. No one did any better and Breding won the title and $8,657. His father Scott Breding won the bull riding at the 1995 edition of the Cody Stampede so their names will be added to the history book of father-son champions here.

Clayton Hass, from Weatherford, Texas claimed the steer wrestling title with a 3.8 second time. That was good for $8,528. In the tie-down roping it was Reese Riemer from Stinett, Texas who got the win. He earned $9,912 for his 8.2 second time.

Barrel racer Carly Taylor took her horse around the cloverleaf pattern in 17.04 seconds to beat the other 154 entries. She earned $10,819.

The 100th Cody Stampede Rodeo saw nearly 1,000 contestants vying for a piece of the $353,641 purse. Plans are underway for the 101st edition of the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede which will be held over the Fourth-of-July holiday in 2020.
