Armstrong, Lexington, Oklahoma, is going into the finals round in Shawnee sitting No. 1 in the aggregate race in the barrel racing. Riding Matts Freckled Cowboy, Armstrong turned in a 16.338 in go-round No. 1 to take home the first place prize, followed by another first place in go-round No. 2 with an ultra fast 16.307.

For her efforts she’s won $2,908 for the go-round wins and is set up perfect for a third consecutive IFYR barrel racing championship. Armstrong has claimed both the 2014 and 2015 IFYR barrel racing titles, this year would make her third.

“It was good,” Gunter says of the record-setting run. “We were just going in there and we just wanted a clean run and we went in there and we were faster than we expected to be. It felt good!”

Then, Gunter and her 12-year-old mare, “Blaze,” came back in round No. 2 to take home another first place win with another impressive run, a 19.685. So far, she’s collected $2,532 in the pole bending.

Gunter, as well as Armstrong, has a strong lead going into the short round and plans to keep the last round solid and consistent.

“I’m just planning to go in there and making a clean run,” Gunter says.

Both Armstrong and Gunter will return tonight, July 15, 2016, at 7:30 for the finals round, where the champions will be crowned in Shawnee at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.
