Fort Smith, Ark., may be best known in the barrel racing world as the home of Old Fort Days, but Lucky Dog Productions has swiftly made Kay Rodgers Park one of its bell-whether stops as part of its regular season schedule. Nearly 1,200 barrel racing teams turned out May 14-15 to test their skills and ride for a share of the almost $38,000 purse.

Wilmar, Ark., cowboy James Barnes earned the 1D Open Average championship with a two-run average of 16.811 seconds, topping reserve winners Stephanie Frei and All Legs N Diamonds by .159 seconds. Barnes and his horse, Spinnemfast Win Cash, placed seventh in the 1D in the first go round, but came blazing back in the second go with an event best run of 16.557 seconds to win the 1D title for the round and secure the 1D Average win.

In all, Barnes rode three horses to paychecks in Fort Smith, earning a total of $1,826.24 in addition to a trophy buckle for claiming the Average title.

Mary Beth Ogle, of Kinta, Okla., rode RLJ Czech This Out to the 2D Average win with a time of 17.315 seconds. The duo landed in the 2D hole in the first go round, but shaved a half second off their time in the second round to place 11th in the 1D, giving them the Average win, and a total payday of $701.83, by just 18 thousandths of a second.

Beebe, Ark., resident Darren Boyce topped the 3D Average standings with a time of 17.838 seconds aboard Shawnee Jet Moon. Boyce, who was the high money earner in Fort Smith with $2,147.50 in winnings, rode four horses to paychecks. His best performance of the weekend came in the second go round, when he won the 1D reserve title aboard Sucha Diamonds Image.

Roanhorse Hancock carried Terry Hughes, of Wyandotte, Okla., to the 4D Average win with a time of 18.821 seconds. The pair had the most consistent times of any of the average winners, with their two go round times within .150 seconds of each other.
