Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Michele McLeod from Whitesboro, Texas, set the arena on fire when she took Slick By Design, known as Slick, around the cloverleaf pattern in a blazing 16.89 seconds. That is the fastest time of the rodeo this year. It put her in first place in the second round and in the lead in the overall standings with a total time of 34.41 seconds on two runs. She is over a tenth of a second ahead of Shelley Morgan who also ran on Monday.
Morgan, from Canton, Texas, had a 17.08 time in the second round and has a total of 34.59 on two runs. Also having great runs were Fallon Taylor from Whitesboro, Texas, Samantha Lyne from Cotulla, Texas, and Jody Sheffield from Ogden, Utah.
Morgan moved into second in the overall standings here, Lyne is in fourth and Sheffield is in fifth. Taylor is tied for sixth place. Taylor is highest in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association at third place. McLeod is in fifth, and Morgan is in ninth. All of these women could use the Reno Rodeo as a springboard for the busy summer rodeo season.
The Reno Rodeo is doubly important to all of the contestants as a Gold stop on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Wrangler Million Dollar Tour. Nearly 700 contestants will be here through nine performances hoping to get big paychecks, tour points and ultimately be at the top of the leaderboard on Saturday night and leave with the coveted championship spurs.
The newly crowned National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion bull rider brought the momentum here. Joe Frost from Randlett, Utah, earned that title in Casper, Wyo., two nights ago for Panhandle State University at Goodwell, Okla. Frost rode Big Bend Rodeo’s Guaconator for 76 points. That is currently part of a tie for third through fifth place.
