JULY 20, 2019, Cheyenne, Wyoming — Cheyenne Frontier Days is introducing a new, tournament-style rodeo format. Each rodeo performance will see event winners and money paid out each day.  The competition will start with a clean slate July 28 for Finals Sunday, and the the highest scores and fastest times will be the 2019 CFD Champions. Slack in the timed events now becomes a qualifying round to make it into the performances.

In the barrel racing, defending barrel racing champion Nellie Miller won the qualifying competition aboard Rafter W Minnie Reba. The Cottonwood, California, barrel racer and “Sister” ran a time of 17.44 seconds, adding $8,224 to her season earnings.

Berthoud, Colorado, resident Kelly Kennedy-Joseph barely qualified to the quarterfinals in barrel racing. Nearly 200 barrel racers competed in a preliminary round, with 72 advancing. Kennedy-Joseph tied for 70th place. Her quarterfinal run July 20 was the fastest time of any barrel racer so far this year at Frontier Park—17.35 seconds.

On July 21, contestants in steer wrestling, breakaway, team- and tie-down roping competed in a second round. The top contestants in these events advanced directly to the finals based on money won.

A new group of barrel racers, bareback, saddle bronc and bull riders competed July 21 for their shot at the semifinals.
