Sam Flannery and Flaming Star Tari set the bar high when they ran first out in the first round, posting a 13.896. That run was worth $1,085. Flaming Star Tari is owned by Judy and Eddie Shaul. Jill Moody and her talented Mr Illuminator bred gelding, Cloudy Illumination, heated up the second round with a 13.854 to bank the first-place paycheck in the round and secure the futurity average title by besting the futurity field of 67 horses. The $2,000 added 2D futurity paid out on a one second split and was sponsored by Ireland Performance Horses of Box Elder, S.D. The first round of the 2D was won by Bogie Webb of Volin, S.D. on the Dashin Elvis bred, This Chick Can Move, owned by Teresa Mead. The second round went to PR Diamond Dude and Joey Painter of Buffalo S.D. PR Diamond Dude, raised by the Painter Ranch is sired by Sunder Frost. The 2D average title went to Kristie Thorstenson and Frostys Best Drift, a 5-year-old gelding sired by Sadies Frosty Drift and owned by Mick and Anita Stroschein. Both Thorstenson and Moody received Double J bags sponsored by Kohr Quarter Horses of Gillette, Wyo. and Flannery Barrel Horses of Mission, S.D.
The top seven average winners in the 1D and the top five average winners in the 2D received trophy jackets sponsored by Myers Training Stables, St. Onge, S.D., and Roper Apparel and Footwear.
A field of 172 entries competed in the $250-added Dakota Hills Veterinary 4D each day. Myers Training Stables and Roper Apparel and Footwear sent trophy jackets home with 1D Champion Melissa Bachand and Rare Rock, 2D Champion Sonya Walz and Ima Firefighter, 3D Champion Kami Ireland and Sadies Hot Hand, and 4D Champion Hallie Melvin and Candi Liquor.
The Ireland family would like to extend their sincere thanks to all who attended the second annual event. Plans are already underway for the 3rd annual race slated for July of 2013.
