Carol Crowder and Baileys French Kiss won the Open 1D Average championship.

More than 460 entries made their way to Craig County Arena June 24-26, as Racing in the Rockies returned to Craig, Colo., for the start of the summer barrel racing season. With more than $16,500 in prize money on the line, the racing was as hot as the weather, and a trio of barrel racers rode their horses to Average championship glory during three tough days of barrel racing.

Carol Crowder and Baileys French Kiss started the event off with the best performance anyone would post all weekend, scoring a time of 17.789 seconds to win Friday’s Open 1D with the best time of the show. The pair placed fifth in the 1D in Saturday’s go round, with a run of 18.098 seconds, and followed up on Sunday with a safety run of 18.367 seconds that only placed them 13th in the round, but secured them the Open 1D Average championship by more than six tenths of a second over reserve champions Royce Romberg and Forrest Gump.

Crowder and her 12-year-old sorrel mare by Frenchmans Guy and out of Pac A Dee, by Pac Bar, won $587 in Open cash, as well as another $79 for a pair of Senior 1D titles earned on Friday and Saturday. Crowder also won a total of $326 aboard Somebody Smokin, who claimed the 2D reserve title in Saturday’s race. In all, Crowder pulled away from Craig County Arena with a $992 payday.

Windsor, Colo., cowgirl Debbie Robbins and SL Kaligha won the 2D Average chamipionship.

Shonna Schorre rode JML Black Fleet to the 3D Open Average win.

Shonna Schorre, of Wellington, Colo., won the 3D Average title aboard her 11-year-old black mare, JML Black Fleet. The daughter of Black Joe King and out of JML Fleeta Charge started slow on Friday, placing 22nd in the 3D with a time of 19.384 seconds, but the mare picked up the pace on Saturday, placing eighth in the 3D with a run of 19.025 seconds. The duo turned in their best performance of the weekend on Sunday, with a run of 18.976 seconds, good enough for sixth place in the 3D and more than fast enough to give them the 3D Average win by more than two tenths of a second.

Terri Gold won of the 4D Average championship aboard her 5-year-old red roan gelding, Heavens Light. The duo began blazing their trail toward the 4D Average in the first go round, placing eighth in the 4D with a run of 20.892 seconds. The son of Heavens Little Lena who is out of Dotta Starlight posted his best time of the show on Saturday, with a run of 19.511 seconds to land 24th in the 3D. The pair followed that up with a 38th-place 3D run of 19.861 seconds in the final round on Sunday to finish with and Average time of 60.264 seconds, almost a second and a half faster than reserve champs Deana Weaver and Golden Sky Flyer.
