The Rocky Mountain Super Race returned to Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 6-8, and the Memorial Day staple event brought many of the best and brightest barrel racers and their equine partners out to play.

With nearly $36,000 in prize money on the line, as well as an estimated $5,000 in prizes—including Bob Berg Buckles, a spot at the Charmayne James clinic in Westcliffe, Colo., Classic Equine gear bags and hay bags, Professional’s Choice pads and protective boots, Formula 707 and Retro Ranch gift certificates and more—the competition was tough from the first run to the last.

The Open Race
Cheryl Robinson and Barnone Extremes parlayed three check-winning runs into the Open 1D Average Championship in Colorado Springs. The pair started the weekend by claiming the 2D reserve championship in Friday’s Open race with a run of 17.659 seconds. They shaved two-tenths-of-a-second off their first go time in the second round to land eighth in the 1D with a 17.466, and improved yet again on Sunday with a 17.465 to finish eighth in the 1D again.

Their efforts brought them $510 in paychecks, as well as a Bob Berg buckle, a sporty jacket sponsored by Knobbs Chiropractic, Triple Crown Feed and Formula 707 gift certificate.

Kim Schulze won the Open 1D title on Friday aboard Vegaspeed. She also won Saturday’s 1D title with French Dream.

Colorado cowgirl Kim Schulze dominated the 1D during the first two days of Open racing with championship runs aboard a pair of outstanding horses. Schulze won the 1D title on Friday with a rapid time of 17.085 seconds while riding Vegaspeed, and then topped the 1D on Saturday aboard French Dream, who scored a time of 16.988 seconds on the WPRA standard pattern, which stood as the fastest time of the weekend. Very likely the only reason Schulze’s name didn’t appear in the top placings again on Sunday was due to the fact that she was competing in Guymon, Okla., where she and Vegaspeed raced to second in the prestigious Pioneer Days Rodeo average. A five-second penalty for a tipped barrel tagged Schulze’s 16.863 second run during Saturday evenings Shoot-Out Slot Race, which was the only dark spot to an otherwise stellar weekend.

Schulze cashed Super Race checks totaling $1,073, plus prizes.

Lana Brown and Snazzy Leader snagged the Open 1D win on Sunday with a run of 17.190 seconds. The duo won the reserve 1D title on Friday and placed fourth in the 1D Slot Race to bring home a total payday of $1,436.

The Slot Race

Veteran barrel racer Kelly Yates dominated the 29-entry Slot Race, riding her two brilliant mounts to a 1-2 finish.

The Pueblo, Colo., cowgirl rode her prized Firewater Fiesta son, Fiesta Del Rey, who is sired by Dual Rey, to the Slot Race win with a run of 17.102 seconds. Their time edged that of Yates’ other horse, Kissmyskooter, a 10-year-old gelding by Elans Playboy and out of the Doc’s Mahogany mare Bubbling Idiot, by just one one-hundredth of a second.

Yates earned $3,834 for taking both the championship and the reserve title and was also awarded a Bob Berg trophy buckle and jacket donated by Mark Bukowski.

Christy Loflin and Sheza Blazin Move placed third with a time of 17.141 seconds, while Sunday Open winners Lana Brown and Snazzy Leader claimed fourth with a 17.207.
Kelsey Haas and Blairs Falcon won the 2D Slot Race championship with a time of 17.602 seconds, while Heather McCall and Ima Cool Dasher took the reserve win with a run of 17.742 seconds. Handsome And Sassy carried Kelly Conrado to a third place finish with a 17.770, and Mandy Teichert and In The Blink Of An Eye placed fourth with a 17.877.
