Job Description –Associate Editor
Direct Report: Barrel Horse News Editor

Barrel Horse News, the barrel racing industry’s leading publication, seeks a highly motivated associate editor. The right person is detail-oriented with strong technical and feature-writing abilities and has a strong working knowledge of the Western performance disciplines, specifically barrel racing.

STATEMENT OF THE JOB: The associate editor is responsible for assisting the editor in production of Barrel Horse News editorial, which includes writing features and departments and proofing PDFs. The associate editor will also be responsible for helping maintain Barrel Horse News’ social media presence and updating the BarrelHorseNews.com website.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research and write two to three articles each month as assigned by the editor that coincide with the editorial mission for the print publication. Responsible for multiple departments monthly, such as Arena Dirt, TOC, BRAUS and FRUP.
  • Research and write two to three digital pieces each month as assigned by the editor that coincide with the editorial mission.
  • Manage weekly social media posts as assigned.
  • Assist in customer-service calls and correspondence, especially those regarding statistics.
  • Assist in procuring photos for magazine features and event coverage.
  • Travel to gather interviews and produce/photograph feature articles. Also travel to events as requested to provide print editorial, website and social media coverage as requested. Some weekend travel and extended hours may be necessary during trips.
  • Assist in proofreading copy for content and accuracy.
  • Assist editor with retrieving emailed corrections and giving to production.
  • Check final corrections and sign off on PDFs.
  • Stay updated on industry players and news, and report them to editor to help generate article ideas.
  • Provide editor with general editorial support during production times; requires being in office during standard hours and working extended hours as necessary.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA or BS Degree with knowledge of AP and BHN style
  • Strong technical- and feature-writing abilities
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-disciplined. Diligent about meeting deadlines and working ahead.
  • Strong background and working knowledge of the Western performance disciplines of the equine industry, specifically barrel racing.
  • Must be able to adapt to rapidly changing environment and work in close cooperation with other employees and other departments
  • Adept at using Microsoft Office, including Excel and Microsoft Word as well as Adobe Creative Suite
  • Proficiency in WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and developing cross-channel content
  • Digital photography skills and familiarity with Photoshop helpful

Job Description – Statistician

STATEMENT OF THE JOBEquiStatthe most comprehensive and complete database in the Western performance horse industry, seeks a highly motivated statistician to join our team. The right person is detail-oriented with strong critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as a love and passion as well as a strong working knowledge of the Western performance disciplines, including barrel racing, cutting, reining and reined cow horse. The statistician is responsible for assisting the department in adding show results from events in the Western performance industry which includes contacting show producers to obtain results, formatting and inputting results into the database and researching pedigrees and people to ensure accuracy. The statistician will also be responsible for helping maintain the integrity of the database through our extensive data verification process as well as communicating with customers that order standard and custom reports via equistat.com, phone or email. Moreover, this position will represent the Morris Media Network Equine Group brands in superior client service, problem solving and resolution providing a deep knowledge of theWestern performance horse industry.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a list of events in each discipline to ensure all results are gathered for database entry 
  • Contact show producers for missing result or any missing information, as well as send out reminders to producers to send results pre- and post- event 
  • Assist customers over phone and email with ordering standard and/or custom reports as well as navigating any online ordering issues 
  • Format and manipulate excel spreadsheets to prepare show results for incorporation to the database 
  • Stay updated on industry players and news to ensure a strong, working knowledge of the industry
  • Research and provide clarity on horse pedigrees and or owners, breeders or trainers to ensure accuracy 
  • Provide managing director and other statisticians with assistance during statistic issues and other peak times; requires being in office during standard hours and working extended hours as necessary. Remote applicants will not be considered
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced knowledge in spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel 
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-disciplined. Diligent about meeting deadlines and working ahead.
  • Strong background and working knowledge of the Western performance disciplines of the equine industry (cutting, reining, barrel racing, western pleasure, etc.) 
  • Must be able to adapt to rapidly changing environment and work in close cooperation with other employees and other departments
  • Adept at using Adobe software
  • Effective communicator with strong ability to multitask 
  • Must love the equine industry and a passion for delivering consistent and correct data 
  • Experience with data entry, record keeping and filing. 
  • Self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision, but also able to effectively work within a team
  • A four-year degree or equivalent work experience 
  • One to three years of experience in a fast-paced office environment with western, publishing, live events, digital and/or media experience is a plus
  • Highly motivated individual with experience in a professional office environment

2024 Barrel Horse News Ambassador Program Application

Barrel Horse News is the leading resource in the barrel racing industry. The mission of our devoted team is to deliver informative and professionally crafted content to our ever-evolving and complex barrel racing audience.

Youth Ambassadors will provide content to Barrel Horse News via email to post on social media accounts, and barrelhorsenews.com during select barrel races and youth events. Content of the posts will be the original creation of the Ambassador, with input from assigning editor at Barrel Horse News. Posts are meant to be a representation of what’s happening at the event, real-time results and recaps and also the surrounding activities and festivities held during the barrel race or youth event.

Posts can include photos, videos/reels, written posts and stories. The number of posts per day will be outlined by assigning editor at Barrel Horse News. Posts should be varied in content, and Ambassadors should be grammatically correct and factual.

Ambassadors will represent Barrel Horse News at the event and should conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner. They should refrain from using derogatory language in posts, and should not post anything offensive or insulting to people or organizations. Ambassadors agree not to post anything political in nature, nor of their own opinion. These posts are editorial – for news and entertainment – and are not advertisements for a product or business (including shout outs).

Ambassadors agree to gather content themselves and cannot allow anyone else to gather the content on his or her behalf. Ambassadors must be confident in their ability to approach winners and event staff and conduct professional interviews and take photos if needed. Ambassadors agree to only collect content for Barrel Horse News social media and digital platforms while on assignment for Barrel Horse News.

CRITERIA:

  • Ages 15-19
  • Compete at one or more of the following youth events:
    • National Junior High Finals Rodeo (June 23 — 29, 2024)
    • National Little Britches Rodeo Association Finals (June 30 — July 6, 2024)
    • International Finals Youth Rodeo (2024 TBD)
    • National High School Finals Rodeo (July 14 — 20, 2024)
    • National Barrel Horse Association Youth and Teen World Championships (July 21 – 27, 2024)
    • Cinch Lazy E World Championship Junior Rodeo (July 23 – 27, 2024)
  • Have access to the internet and smartphone or computer
  • Must know how to use Microsoft Word and email
  • Must have access to a smartphone or camera for images
  • Must conduct oneself with professionalism and be in good standing with their youth rodeo organizations
  • Must have a respectful social media presence (while a social media presence is not a requirement, if the Ambassador does have social media, it must be respectful and hold up to the standards of Barrel Horse News.)
