Wenda Johnson Wins 125th Edition of Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
By Johna Cravens courtesy FWSSR
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 5, 2022) — The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo came a rousing conclusion on Saturday night with the final performance of the ProRodeo Tournament.

Wenda Johnson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma has set the barrel racing on fire in Fort Worth this week. It started in her qualification rounds when she set an arena record with a 16.17-second run. She blew that away on Saturday night when she and Macgyver Moonflash, an 8-year-old bay gelding owned by Tres Mesa Horses, stopped the clock in 16.08 seconds. Johnson has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo the past two years by choosing the rodeos that she goes to carefully and not going to as many as expected. She also has a full-time job as a nurse practitioner. The $24,520 that she won in Fort Worth will give her a big boost on her way to a third NFR qualification.
Sissy Winn of Chapman Ranch, Texas was the first barrel racer down the alley during the championship finals of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s ProRodeo Tournament.
Although Winn and her horse Chewingthehotwire (Flaming Fire Water x Native Quick Dash x Royal Quick Dash) missed a top-four finish and the accompanying paycheck, she earned $5,000 in bonus money for winning the Jerry Ann Taylor Best-Dressed Cowgirl Award. She also received a trophy bracelet from the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.
Winn was the final barrel racer in Friday night’s Semifinal B, tying Waco’s Stephanie Fryar for fourth with a time of 16.54. A tie-breaker rule meant Winn advanced to Saturday night’s championship round.
Once she knew she would be in the finals, she and her mother Melissa went to work on an outfit.
“My mom and I stayed up all night to finish this,” Winn said.
They embellished clothes from Rock and Roll Cowgirl, adding gold and multicolored sequins in swirling patterns. She said that she truly enjoyed learning to sew with her mom.
Pam Minick of Fort Worth, a National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame board member and honoree and former WPRA vice president, said the award is to encourage women in professional rodeo to continue the tradition of wearing colorful western attire in the rodeo arena.
The award is named for Taylor, a Hall of Fame honoree who was known for her flamboyant style. She was a trick rider and trick roper who entered the hall in 1986 and died in 2012.

This is the second year that the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament has featured breakaway roping, and the winner just lives about an hour away in Dublin, Texas. Kelsie Chase Domer stopped the clock in 1.8 seconds to get her first buckle in Dickies Arena. She earned a total of $26,800.

A near capacity crowd was on hand to see the conclusion of the rodeo and plans are underway for the 126th edition in 2023.
Hailey Kinsel Wins Semifinal B
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 4, 2022) — It was a night of hits and misses at Semi-Finals B at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s ProRodeo Tournament.
Those misses mostly came from contestants who were affected by the weather, stuck in airports, and just couldn’t get here. They were replaced by the next qualifiers in the lineup. In every case, those contestants took advantage of their unexpected opportunity.

Two-time FWSSR barrel racing champion Hailey Kinsel of Cotulla, Texas, who now resides in nearby Stephenville, is poised to win it again. She and her great mare DM Sissy Hayday (PC Frenchmans Hayday x Royal Sissy Irish x Royal Shake Em) stopped the clock in 16.26 to win Semifinal B. She could make history here if she wins this rodeo for the third consecutive year. Scroll down for results from Semifinal A and B and a list of barrel racing finals qualifiers.
Each of Friday night’s winners earned a $4,000 check, and the best of the field will face the best of Thursday night’s field on Saturday. The Championship Finals will start at 7:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, where the fastest time or highest score will win the title and a big check for $20,000.
The 125th edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo winds down on Saturday, and as a “thank you” to the citizens of Forth Worth and North Texas, everyone will receive free grounds admission. While free grounds admission doesn’t provide access to Saturday night’s Championship Finals Rodeo, visitors can enjoy shopping, the Mattress Firm petting zoo, Children’s Barnyard, rabbit show, an AQHA horse show as well as the Bud Light Roadhouse and The Corkyard on Simmons Bank Plaza. David Nail will headline in the Bud Light Roadhouse and Ginny Mac in The Corkyard.
Stevi Hillman Wins Semifinal A
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 3, 2022) —While it was cold, icy and miserable last night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, the climate inside Dickies Arena was filled with the heat of competition.
Barrel racer Stevi Hillman of Weatherford, Texas, rode the Dunn Ranch-owned 6-year-old mare Famous Lemon Drop (First Down French x A Famous Lady x Dash Ta Fame) to a 16.40 to top the leaderboard of Semifinals A. Hillman is a six-time Wrangler NFR qualifier and was paired with the fast yellow mare last year. Famous Lemon Drop herself had an extensive resume before she found rodeo fame with Hillman—started by Summer Hatch and futuritied by trainer DaCota Monk, Lemon Drop earned close to $100,000 as a futurity horse in 2020 with Monk.
Under Hillman, the mare won two go-rounds at the 2021 Wrangler NFR and finished in a tie for fourth with Emily Beisel in the NFR average. Hillman and Lemon Drop were the highest-money winners in the first set of competition at the FWSSR and now have their eyes on a championship title.
The second Semi-Finals will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST, where the final four qualifiers for Saturday night’s Championship Finals will be determined. Scroll down for full results from Fort Worth.
Rule, Fryar Advance on Wild Card Wednesday at Fort Worth Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 2, 2022) — Wild Card Wednesday has been one of the most highly anticipated events on the roster of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, and it didn’t disappoint.
Eight contestants in each of the events had one last opportunity to advance to the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament Semifinals with a chance to win a legendary and prestigious rodeo championship. Competition started with seven brackets. The top two money earners in each bracket advanced directly to the semifinals.
All the third-place finishers met in the Wild Card, where just two advance to compete again in Dickies Arena. FWSSR is celebrating 125 years of history, and just two of them have included the tournament style of rodeo. At each level, contestants start with a clean slate. That clean slate meant contestants gave it their all, hoping to compete here again. With a star-studded field in every event, the pressure was on.
It was fitting to see Dona Kay Rule at the top of the barrel racing on National Girls & Women in Sports Day. The Minco, Oklahoma, cowgirl has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo three times and did it after raising a family and having a career in the saddle-making business. Now her focus is her passion—barrel racing. She and her great 13-year-old gelding High Valor (Valiant Hero x Rare High x Rare Form) had the fastest time Wednesday at 16.26 seconds. Stephanie Fryar from Waco, Texas, and 7-year-old gelding Some Streakin French (Frenchmans Fabulous x Some Streakin Chick x Some Dasher) finished second with a 16.35.
The first of two semifinals will start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night in Dickies Arena with eight competitors in each event. The top four will be back Saturday, along with the top four from Friday’s semifinals going for big money and championship prize package, which include trophy buckles that become family heirlooms.
Wenda Johnson Owns Two Fastest Times So Far of FWSSR

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 1, 2022) — Most of the contestants at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo have qualified for the ProRodeo Tournament through being among the world’s best.
Two-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Wenda Johnson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, owns the two fastest barrel racing times of the rodeo so far thanks to Macgyver Moonflash (First Moon Flash x Touched By The Moon x Black Moons Arising). Johnson and “Mac” set the Dickies Arena record on Monday night at 16.17 seconds. They came back Tuesday and were close to the same pace at 16.21. She is now headed to the semi-finals after winning $3,520.
Wenda Johnson Breaks Freshly Set Dickies Arena Record
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 31, 2022) — Fast times are the expected in the barrel racing at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. Fans watched last week as world champion Jordon Briggs and her great horse Famous Lil Jet had the fastest time recorded in Dickies Arena at 16.25 seconds. That record only stood for two performances.

On Monday, Wenda Johnson from Pawhuska, Oklahoma, stopped the clock in 16.17 seconds on Macgyver Moonflash (First Moon Flash x Touched By The Moon x Black Moons Arising), one of two horses she rode at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Both “Mac” and her other NFR mount Steal Money are owned by Tres Mesa horses and were trained by Luis Hernandez before going on to success in the aged-event pen—Mac with Johnson, and “Mo” under Kassie Mowry. The two geldings have since flourished in the rodeo arena with Johnson.
Johnson is a two-time Wrangler NFR qualifier, having competed in Texas in 2020 and Las Vegas in 2021. A big win here could jumpstart her 2022 season to get her back there again next December.
Jordon Briggs Sets New Dickies Arena Record
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 29, 2022) — Saturday at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) was full of pro rodeo action. The day began with an 11 a.m. performance of the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament in Dickies Arena. The fifth bracket of contestants roped and rode in their second round of competition to determine who would advance to next week’s semifinals.
A new group of rodeo athletes (bracket six) began their tournament journey at the 7:30 p.m. rodeo performance and will return Sunday afternoon a.m. for their second qualifying round.

Jordon Briggs, the reigning world champion barrel racer, set a new Dickies Arena record in her event—16.25 seconds—to win the second round of her bracket aboard her world champion gelding Famous Lil Jet (Dash Ta Fame x Blazin Black Beauty x Blazin Jetolena). The record of 16.30 was previously held by Hailey Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday in 2020, the first year the FWSSR moved into the new Dickies Arena.
Briggs, the daughter of three-time world champion Kristie Peterson, won the barrel racing championship at Fort Worth in Will Rogers Coliseum in 2009 while she was still Jordon Peterson.
She’d love to join the exclusive club of athletes to win Fort Worth championships in both venues, and she’s part way there after she advanced to the semifinals February 3-4. The four fastest times from each semifinal compete for the championship February 5.
Ilyssa Riley Takes Barrel Racing Round Win at Fort Worth Rodeo
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 27, 2022) — Ilyssa Riley from Hico, Texas, raced to a first-round win at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Pro Rodeo Tournament. Riley earned $1,760 on Thursday thanks to the efforts of 2016 gelding Mistys Money Blurr (The Money Depot x Mistys Dash Of Fame x Dash Ta Fame). Now owned by Riley, the gelding was trained by Kassie Mowry and won the Ardmore Barrel Futurity during his 2020 futurity year with Mowry before finding his new home with Riley, where the two are picking up steam at the pro rodeos.

Also mounted aboard the Leslie Willis-trained and -futuritied gelding Championofthehouse (Furyofthewind x Teenish x Pritzi Dash), Riley is ranked among the best in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, currently holding the No. 8 spot. The Texas barrel racer qualified for the field of 56 tournament contestants from the qualifying rodeo at Waxahachie last March. Since then, Riley qualified for the Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo where she finished second and recently earned a big check at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver.
She and seven other cowgirls return Friday at 2 p.m. for their second qualifying round. The two highest-money winners will earn a berth at the semifinals on February 3-4.
Lari Dee Guy of Abilene won the breakaway roping with a time of 1.9 seconds. The 2021 National Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee was roping just across the street from the Hall, where her name and memorabilia are enshrined.
The fourth set of contestants finish their qualifying rounds Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. and a new group begins their tournament journey at 7:30 p.m. that evening.
Tonozzi Wins Second Round of Third Set
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 26, 2022) — The third set of competitors finished their second round of competition in the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Pro Rodeo Tournament with two entrants in each of the eight disciplines advancing to the semifinals on February 3-4.

Two-time world champion barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi just won the championship at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver. She finished out of the money on Tuesday in Fort Worth, but she and her mare Babe on the Chase (Chasin Firewater x Streakin Six Babe x Streakin Six) ran the cloverleaf pattern in 16.58 seconds to win the second round. “Birdie” was also her championship mount in Denver.
Tonozzi has competed at the Fort Worth rodeo for 18 years and won the championship here once. She says she’d love to win here again, but her path to the tournament win has an extra step. She finished third in money won in her set and will have to win first or second the wild card round on February 2 to get to the semifinals.
The winning breakaway roper again took home more than $100 per 1/10 of a second. The reigning world champion Sawyer Gilbert of Buffalo, South Dakota, stopped the clock in 1.7 seconds—the fastest time of the rodeo thus far—and won $1,760. She and Tuesday’s winner, Texan Madison Outhier, move on to the semifinals.
Two Texans top the early money winners at Fort Worth’s Pro Rodeo Tournament
by Johna Cravens for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 21, 2022)— Two Texans—Stevi Hillman of Weatherford and bull rider Tyler Ray Taylor of Stephenville—were the two biggest money winners in the first set of competition at the 2022 edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Pro Rodeo Tournament.
Hillman, a veteran barrel racer with six National Finals Rodeo qualifications, finished second Friday night, then clocked the fastest time at the rodeo this year, a 16.41 to win on Saturday. Riding Famous Lemon Drop (First Down French x A Famous Lady x Dash Ta Fame), a 5-year-old palomino mare owned by Dunn Ranch, Hillman won $3,080 and advanced to the semifinals on February 3 and 4.
Brittney Barnett of Stephenville was the other barrel racer to move on to the semifinals, while Shelley Morgan of Eustace advanced to the wild card round.
J.J. Hampton, a 17-time world champion roper from Stephenville, was the final breakaway roper to compete. She missed her calf Friday night and knew she needed to be as quick as possible to have a chance to advance.
Just 1.9 seconds later, Hampton had won the round. She and Megan Orman of Anderson, who won Friday’s round and finished fourth on Saturday, both advanced to the semifinals. Arizona’s Lynn Smith, whose 2.1-second run was second-fastest on Saturday, moves on to the wild card round.
This is the second year for the FWSSR Pro Rodeo Tournament, with 56 of the top rodeo athletes in North America competing in each of eight events for more than $1.1 million dollars prize money.
Seven groups of eight athletes will compete in consecutive rodeo performances in each event. The top two money winners from each group qualify for one of two semifinal rounds.
The third-highest money winner in each set qualifies for the wild card round. The other four competitors go into a non-qualifiers pool and the highest remaining money winner in each event also gets to move to the wild card round.
The top two money winners of that second-chance round move on to the semifinals as well. Then, the top four from each semifinal advance to the finals on Saturday, February 8 when the champions will be crowned.
A new set of competitors compete Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. and Monday night at 7:30 at Dickies Arena.

Pro Rodeo Tournament Begins 18-Performance Run at Fort Worth
by Johna Cravens for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
FORT WORTH, Texas (January 17, 2022)—After a year’s hiatus, the new era of rodeo at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo continued Friday when the second FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament began. The event features 56 of the top rodeo athletes in North America each of eight events competing for more than $1 million dollars prize money.
In each event, seven groups of eight athletes will compete in two rodeo performances. The top two money winners from each group qualify for one of two semifinal rounds.
The third-highest money winner in each set will qualify for a berth in the wild card round. The other four competitors go into a non-qualifiers pool and the highest remaining money winner in each event from that pool also gets to move to the wild card round. The winner of that second-chance round moves on to the semifinals as well. Then, the top four from each semifinal move on to the finals on Saturday, February 8 when the champions will be crowned.

Breakaway roping became a crowd favorite after its introduction at the FWSSR Pro Rodeo Tournament in 2020. Morgan Orman of Anderson roped the round-win with a time of 2.7 seconds. She and her husband Jake, a team roper, both compete in professional rodeo. Fort Worth was the first major rodeo to offer equal prize money to breakaway ropers and draws some of the best ropers in North America to the competition.
Brittney Barnett, a native Californian who now lives in Stephenville, was the first barrel racer of the night and she set a pace that couldn’t be beaten. The 2020 NFR cowgirl took the win with a time of 16.44 seconds.
The same field of cowboys and cowgirls return to Dickies Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for their second round of competition which determines who moves on to the semifinal and wild card rounds.
