FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS — updated MAY 21, 2022 — Saturday’s finals at the 45th Old Fort Days Futurity and Super Derby had barrel racing fans on the edges of their seats as the 45 fastest in the Futurity and 20 fastest in the Super Derby ran in the clean-slate, fastest-time-wins Old Fort Days Finals.

After breaking Jolene Montgomery and Jets Heart N Soul’s 2019 Fort Smith arena record of 16.250 with a 16.148 to win the Super Derby Time Trials, Kristin Hanchey and Smooth Way Ta Heaven returned in the finals with another blistering performance of 16.220 to win the Super Derby for $24,944. Hanchey and the 2017 mare, by Blings Smooth Guy and out of Cash Ta Heaven by JL Dash Ta Heaven, owned by Tracey Williams, were also the 2021 Old Fort Days Futurity reserve champions.

Kristin Hanchey and 2017 mare Smooth Way Ta Heaven (Blings Smooth Guy x Cash Ta Heaven x JL Dash Ta Heaven) won the 2022 Old Fort Days Super Derby for $24,944 with a time of 16.220.

Molli Montgomery and TRheavensilluminated dominated in the Old Fort Days Futurity Finals, winning the $43,460 championship by more than two-tenths with a 16.330. The 4-year-old gelding by JL Dash Ta Heaven and out of Jill Moody’s National Finals Rodeo mare TR Dashing Badger (“Dolly”) by Mr Illuminator is owned by Tracey Lambert.

“We as riders accentuate what horses are, but those great horses are just great. I don’t like to take hardly any credit, because those horses are the great ones,” Montgomery said in an interview earlier this year. “He’s one of those horses. He’s one of the special ones.”

It’s the third futurity championship this year for Montgomery and “Cyrus.” The duo won the Lone Star Shootout Futurity in January, the Select Stallion Stakes Barrel Bash Futurity in March, and now Fort Smith.

“He’s been the easiest horse I’ve ever trained in my life,” Montgomery said after winning the Lone Star Shootout. “I got him the day after Thanksgiving of his 2-year-old year. He wasn’t even out of the round pen. That’s a really short window, a lot shorter than what I like to work with. To add to it, we’re gone [hauling to futurities] quite a bit in December and January. This horse really came along fast. I still took him slow, but after I got him out of the round pen and had him about two months, I loped the barrels on him. By the second week of loping the barrels, I knew this was a great horse. It was just going to be whether or not I could harness it and control it smoothly enough to clock.”

Molli Montgomery and Tracey Lambert’s 4-year-old gelding TRheavensilluminated (JL Dash Ta Heaven x TR Dashing Badger x Mr Illuminator) win the 2022 Old Fort Days Futurity with a 16.330 for $43,460.
