It had been an up-and-down week for Lisa Lockhart since her win in the 2nd Go of the 2011 NFR. The duo had run consistently fast times, recording two second-place finishes and two fourth-place finishes. The South Dakota cowgirl and her prized mount once again found their footing in the 9th Go with a brilliant 13.79-second run, giving them their second win of the rodeo, and their second consecutive NFR with multiple go round wins.
“I knew we had to get topped off on that first [barrel],” Lockhart said. “By the end of the week, horses are starting to get little tricks up their sleeves and little things that start going awry.
“I know several girls have hit the third barrel, so [the horses] are just getting cheat-y.”
Lockhart entered the round intent on keeping Louie on point and keeping herself focused. She knew if she could just ride calm and confidently that Louie would do the rest. She just had to stay out of his way and not override him.
“Tonight, it was just a matter of pushing him to get him up in there to get around it, and I know I wobbled it,” Lockhart said. “It was just a blur. I guess it was fast and furious, but it worked.”
With a third-place finish in the 9th Go, Brittany Pozzi once again extended her lead in the race for the World Championship. Sears trails Pozzi, who leads the World Championship standings with $192,724.80 in 2011 earnings, by $13,860.63.
Sears extended her lead in the NFR Average standings with a sixth-place finish of 13.99 seconds. She heads into the 10th Go round 2.37 seconds ahead of second place Christina Richman.
The prize for winning the NFR Average is a check for $45,865.38. Barring a hit barrel, Sears is in line to capture not only her second World Championship, but also her first NFR Average title with a successful run in the 10th Go.
