Jessie Telford piloted her home-raised and -trained gelding Famous Cool Whip to a 13.49 to win the fourth round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
December 9, 2018 — Las Vegas — Caldwell, Idaho, barrel racer Jessie Telford guided her home-raised and -trained gelding Famous Cool Whip to a 13.49 to win the fourth round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The time tied for a fourth-round record fastest time.
She called upon “Cool Whip” in rounds three and four after riding Connie McCormmach’s mare Shu Fire in the first two rounds. Telford says Cool Whip felt green and spooky in morning practices the first couple days of the NFR, which is why she chose to run Shu Fire. However, when Cool Whip settled in, Telford knew she had a shot. The big, long-strided 7-year-old gelding by Dash Ta Fame and out of Telford’s high school rodeo mount Had A Kanita by Docs Rocky Top more than pulled through in the fourth round.
“We got to get back in the arena yesterday [Saturday] morning for another practice, and Cool Whip felt awesome, back to himself, settled in, confident, and he just said, ‘You need to run me now,'” Telford said. “My very good friend Sue Smith rode him for me the other day, just helping me out with some stuff, and she put it into terms that he’s the biggest horse she’s ever rode who feels small. He can make himself short strided and feel like you’re on a little horse, but he’s 17 hands.”
With the win, Telford moves from 12th in the world standings to ninth and boosts herself to second in the average with a time of 55.06 on four runs. Amberleigh Moore and CP Dark Moon continue to lead the average in 54.55 on four and sit second in the world with $182,473 after entering the NFR ranked 13th. Moore has also taken the lead in the Wrangler NFR Ram Truck Top Gun race for winning the most NFR earnings in a single event with $93,346.16. Hailey Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday hold onto their lead in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings with $242,392, despite hitting the third barrel in Round Four.
