The veteran barrel racer bested a talented field of Wrangler National Finals Rodeo barrel racers navigating challenging arena conditions en route to earning the $19,002 go-round victory. Lockhart entered the NFR ranked No. 3 in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Standings with $121,617.

After a costly slip at the first barrel in round one Lockhart came back with a vengeance jockeying Louie to the type of silky smooth run fans have come to know and admire him for.

“I am so glad to have the win tonight,” said Lockhart. “This is only the sixth run he’s made since having a major injury to his stifle after Houston. I didn’t feel at all prepared for coming here. I just had to have faith that he could pick up where he left off. I knew he knows his job and tonight he proved it again.”2_DSC_0377

With many horses struggling at the second barrel and eight of the top 15 hitting barrels, Lockhart said her strategy was to stay solid and safe.

“I rode very conservatively tonight. Although I couldn’t see what was going on in the arena, I could hear that the times were not what they have been in the past, so I had it in my mind to back off just a little and let Louie pick his pace.”

First-time NFR qualifier Kassidy Dennison of Tohatchi, N.M., the first member of the Navajo nation to qualify for the NFR in the barrel racing, finished in the second spot with her time of 14.31 aboard Sierra Hall Of Fame (“Eagle”). Rounding out the top three was 20-year NFR veteran Sherry Cervi with a 14.35 aboard Stingray.

World standings leader Kaley Bass and Wonders Cowboy Dan posted a 14.66 to place fifth running near the bottom of the ground, while round one winner and ever flamboyant cowgirl Fallon Taylor encountered a slip and unfortunate plus-five penalty.
