Kindyl Scruggs and Melrose Chrome Win the Women’s Rodeo World Championships

MAY 18, 2024, (ARLINGTON, TEXAS) — The Women’s Rodeo World Championships concluded May 18 inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in stellar fashion. The stakes were high with $750,000 up for grabs. When it was all said and done Kindyl Scruggs took the top honors in the barrel racing with a 15.384 to earn the $60,000 championship.

Scruggs jockeyed her 10-year-old gelding Melrose Chrome (First Place Texas x Crownroyalmercedes x Krimps Elmer) to master the setup inside AT&T Stadium. Scruggs and “Chrome” have been partners for several years and have found their stride in the rodeo arena. While Chrome found success as a futurity horse prior to Scruggs taking ownership it took the duo some time to work through second barrel issues. Since posting their first earnings according to EquiStat in 2021 the duo have earned more than $26,000 together. Now, the gelding can add $60,000 to their earnings record.

Scruggs and Chrome have been finding much success in the rodeo arena, specifically with the World Champions Rodeo Alliance-run events such as the WCRA Stampede at The E, Rodeo Corpus Christi and now the WRWC — as well as International Professional Rodeo Association rodeos.

“I have taken my time and introduced him to rodeos since I’ve had him so that makes it more special to have him doing so good now,” Scruggs said in January after running the fastest of the International Finals Rodeo.

As a barrel racer Scruggs in more than adept at handling pressure situations such as the clean-slate finals at the WRWC inside AT&T Stadium. The Southhaven, Mississippi, resident has banked more than $243,000 in EquiStat reported lifetime earnings. She came into the WRWC in the 20th position on the leaderboard and battled it out throughout the week to make it to the championships.

She started her week in Fort Worth, Texas, inside Cowtown Coliseum and worked her way through the rounds steadily advancing and winning the Semifinals Round in the Pro division with a 13.097 to earn a spot in the finals. Ultimately, as the third lady out on the ground she finished the week as the No. 1 cowgirl.

The WRWC took place in-between the first and second rounds of the 2024 PBR World Finals. Highlighting the shootout round were 12 barrel racers, three team ropers and three breakaway ropers.

The WRWC hosted more than 800 contestant during the course of the WRWC Week held during the 2024 PBR World Finals. The more than week-long schedule was slated to pay out more than $1.1 million. Since launching in 2020 the WRWC has awarded more than $3 million.
