Barrel racing surpassed the $50 million milestone in 2023 with EquiStat tabulating the results of 1,468 shows for $55.9 million. That’s an increase of $8.6 million from 2022’s $47.3 million, a growth rate of 18%, with only 27 more shows added to the data pool. The top 25 events accounted for $24.1 million, or 43% of all money won in the industry. Purses within that group rose by $4 million.
While purses rose, the same cannot be said for the number of actual competitors receiving a share. In spite of additional events, the number of money-winning horses, riders and sires stagnated, marked by scant decreases. Outside of the COVID year of 2020, that’s never happened when EquiStat has increased the number of events tabulated.
Although those decreases in horses and riders receiving money are statistically insignificant, they indicate a trend that’s been growing over the past several years. Purses have been soaring, sometimes with growth near 50% over five and 10 years ago, but the number of horses and riders winning that money hasn’t increased by the double digits, yet staying less than 10%.
The increased use of carryover times has concentrated the distribution of money for horses and riders. A glance back at past statistical issues will show how there was very little crossover from the leading aged-event horses to the divisional charts. Now, the divisional charts, which will be discussed in full in the April 2024 issue of Barrel Horse News, are dominated by aged-event horses.
It’s also evident through individual EquiStat reports, which show the same time may be responsible for two, three or even four checks on one run. This has increased steadily over the years. Carryovers are a boon for producers and put less runs on the equine athletes, but they’re also concentrating the distribution of purses. The incentive programs concentrated the industry’s wealth within an elite group of stallions. The number of sires of money winners declined at a rate of 2% over each of the past two years. However, the number of owners and breeders are growing at about the same rate. EquiStat traced 13,940 owners in 2023, up by 412, and 10,725 breeders, up by 219.
