Celebrating 30 Years of Barrel Horse News

BARREL HORSE NEWS set out with a simple mission 30 years ago: to serve the barrel racing community with integrity, accuracy and heart. What started out as a modest newspaper-style publication — distributed with the help of organizations and event producers — has grown into the sport’s most trusted voice. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we’re not just marking time. We’re honoring a community, a lifestyle and a passion that binds us all.

Barrel racing has evolved dramatically since the debut issue of BHN in May 1996. We’ve watched breeding programs become more sophisticated, training philosophies expand, technology reshape how horses are conditioned and cared for, and competitors across all ages and skill levels continue to step up their horsemanship. Through all those changes, BHN has been right there: documenting trends, highlighting expert insight, celebrating the wins and preserving the stories that define our sport.

This milestone is more than just looking back with nostalgia — it’s about recognizing the people who made it possible. Our readers, contributors, photographers, industry partners and advertisers have stood with us every stride. You’ve shared triumphs, heartbreaks, and the hard-earned wisdom that comes only from life lived with horses. Your voices have shaped this magazine more than any editorial plan ever could.

As we step into the next chapter, we’re doubling down on what matters most. You’ll see renewed investment in long-forum journalism, deeper training and veterinary content, expanded coverage across regions, and even more digital storytelling that brings the sport to life in real time. Our tradition is strong, but innovation has always driven us — and the next 30 years will be no exception. From all of us at BHN, thank you for making this milestone possible.

The January issue is dedicated to those who’ve made 30 years a reality. You’ll learn about the history of the publication and those contributors who’ve shaped the magazine and industry. Read about the history of the publication on page 30. Read about legendary photographer Kenneth Springer, who’s been contributing to BHN since the inaugural issue, on page 34. Then, read about barrel racing historian and award-winning journalist Tanya Randall on page 40.

You’ll also find the biggest shows of the season like the BFA World Championships, the NBHA Open and Senior World Championships, WPRA World Finals and more. We hope you enjoy this issue as you ring in the New Year. Be sure to stay up-to-date online at barrelhorsenews.com, as BHN staff bring you the latest news, entertainment and training tips.

Until next time, stay safe.
