Tom Balding has always been fascinated with how things are made. Now, the custom bit and spur maker will be the subject of How It’s Made, part of the lineup of shows on The Discovery Channel’s Science Network.

A film crew will arrive on Sept. 19 and spend several days filming at Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, according to show producer Francois Senecal. Balding and his staff will demonstrate the process of hand-crafting a bit and a pair of spurs.

How It’s Made is seen in more than 100 countries by more than 130 million viewers. It is produced in 22 languages and has separate English language versions to account for different measuring systems in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom.

Since its first show in 2000, the program has covered more than 900 subjects. Past companies featured include Harley Davidson, Bell Helicopter, ASICS and New Balance shoes, Wilson footballs and Rolls Royce automobiles. They have produced shows in 16 different countries.

“I’m a huge fan of the show,” said Tom Balding, who has crafted his custom wares in Sheridan, Wyo., for 27 years. “And nearly everyone I know likes these types of shows. We have always offered tours to our customers, so it’s really exciting to bring that experience to a world-wide audience.”

Senecal became aware of Balding through a YouTube video on Balding’s website and was hooked.

“Cowboys are iconic throughout the world and a symbol of American culture and heritage,” he said. “We’re looking forward to showing how cowboy crafts are made.”

An air date for Balding’s episode has yet to be determined.
