The 2003 College National Finals Rodeo Steer Wrestling Champion competed in professional rodeo, turning in his best season in 2007 when he finished 17th in the PRCA World standings with more than $53,000 in season earnings. That was the same year that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Radiation and chemotherapy treatments ultimately derailed his hopes of a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo berth that season.
Wisness died in his sleep in August 2008.
“So many young people are afraid to set a goal for fear of failure,” Julie Wisness told the McKenzie County Farmer. “We want young people to know that they can accomplish their dreams, and we want to help them do that.”
The scholarship bearing Wisness’ name has been established with the Watford City (N.D.) Area Dollars for Scholars organization.
