Chances are your tack room has an abundance of cold-weather gear for the horses — but what’s hanging in your closets? Even horses unaccustomed to cold weather temps are typically hardier than humans. Plus, they have the bonus of people providing extra care and heavier blankets.
Heated clothing has become popular in recent years. Not all products are made the same or cost the same. When comparing brands, review which areas of the clothing have heating coils. Some are only on the back or shoulders; others include multiple units. Also, look for the size and type of batter pack. Smaller battery packs will be lighter and less cumbersome.
Personal preference is the deciding factor when it comes to choosing between a jacket or a vest. However, the more times a heated item is washed, the quicker the electrical components fail. Opting for a vest, which can be kept clean longer by wearing under a top layer, may offer the best return on investment.
“The new heated jackets and vests are amazing,” said South Dakota barrel racer Samantha Flannery. “Cowgirl Tuff has new fleece-lined pants that are super warm too.”
