FWSSR Bracket 1 Round 2

(January 25, 2025) FORT WORTH, TEXAS — Bracket 1 Round 2 saw the completion of the first of seven brackets of competition on January 25. Toria Madsen of Blackfoot, Idaho, was a last-minute replacement in Bracket 1. She was the final runner Saturday night but managed to win the round with a time of 16.46. She will have to wait to see if she gets another chance to compete at Dickies Arena since she and LaTricia Duke of Zephyr, Texas, who won the first round, tied in money won in their bracket. Duke moved on to the Wild Card Round while Madsen went into the last-chance, non-qualifier pool where she will see how her winnings stack up with those who finish lower than third in the other brackets. Only the top money winner in that category will advance to the Wild Card Round. Winn again, followed in second place with a 16.63 in Bracket 1 Round 2 bringing her earnings to $3,600 and earning her a Semifinals qualification along with Duke.

FWSSR Bracket 2 Round 2

(January 27, 2025) FORT WORTH, TEXAS — Wenda Johnson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, holds the Dickies Arena barrel racing record at 16.08 seconds with Steal Money. While she wasn’t quite that fast on Monday, her time of 16.27 aboard Hesa Mr Moonflash was nearly two-tenths of a second quicker than any other cowgirl and gave her the round win in Bracket 2 Round 2. Hesa Mr Moonflash, joined Johnson’s arsenal in December of 2024 when Highpoint Performance Horses purchased the 9-year-old gelding in November 2024. Prior to that he’d been in the hands of Jamie Montano and owned by Kiowa Creek Performance Horses. Started on the pattern by Carole Strickland, “Diego” and Montano earned $63,266 in EquiStat reported earnings together before Johnson took over the reins. Johnson took Diego with her to the 2024 National Finals Rodeo as a backup to “Mo,” who is also owned by Highpoint Performance Horses. Both Diego and Mo also share similar bloodlines as well, a pedigree which has been prosperous for Johnson. Both Diego and Mo are by First Moonflash, who’s by First To Flash and out of Nagano Moon. Diego is out of the Royal Shake Em mare Royal Wild Time. While Mo is out of the Stoli mare Im Chica Stoli. Johnson has also found success on the First Moonflash gelding Dreams First Flash, which can be credited to Johnson’s introduction into success with First Moon Flash bred horses. “Flash” is by First Moonflash and out of the First Down Dash mare First Down Dream. Then, she also had Macgyver Moonflash (First Moonflash x Touched By The Moon x Black Moons Arising) before his untimely death in 2023. Johnson’s more than $1.2 million in EquiStat lifetime earnings can predominately be attributed to these First Moonflash horses.

With Bracket 2 concluded, Johnson and Jymmy Kay Cox share the same amount of money won in their bracket at $2,425. They each earned $2,300 for their round wins and $125 each for their lower-placed runs. Johnson turned in a 19.49 in Bracket 2 Round 1 for sixth place, while Cox turned in a 21.64 in Bracket 2 Round 2 for seventh place. However, Johnson turned in the faster time and therefore won the tie-breaker for the Wild Card qualification.

Tiany Schuster and Julie Plourde each advance to the Semifinals from Bracket 2 having won $3,200 and $2,800, respectively.
