In the winner’s circle of the Thomas and Mack media room, Taylor commented that the helmet may be her “new thing.” Initially sporting one to advocate safety in the sport of barrel racing, she touted the headwear’s comfort and versatility in matching her ever-flamboyant wardrobe. 
She also said that the improved ground conditions enabled her and Flos Heiress to make the type of winning run that they’re used to making, citing improved confidence for Babyflo and timing on the part of her jockey. The two are running hard at the world champion buckle, but the race is far from over. Several 13s were turned in tonight, and it took a 14-flat or better to pull a check in the ultra-tough round.
Lisa Lockhart and An Oakie With Cash turned in a 13.88 by virtue of barrels so tight, “Louie” fans held their breath. Placing second in the round, Lockhart also moved into second in the world, bumping Kaley Bass (who clocked a 14.23) down another notch to third place. A Streak Of Rita ran tough again for Trula Churchill, who stopped the clock in 13.90 seconds for third place. Sherry Cervi and “Stingray” bounced back from last night’s penalized round to fourth place with a 13.91. Jana Bean and Michele McLeod rounded out the top six.
With six rounds to go, anything can happen in the hunt for a world title. Kaley Bass may have conceded her lead in the world standings for now, but she sits third in an ultra-tight average race. That average pays $48,732 to win, and she’s mounted on the 2014 WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year who has been a go-round winner here before. Kassidy Dennison is within striking distance and currently sits second in the aggregate. Nancy Hunter barely grazed the two barrels that fell in tonight’s run, penalizing her otherwise 13.79-second run, but she’s holding down fifth place in the world at the conclusion of tonight’s performance.
