Pozzi, Sears Split NFR 1st Go

The win was Pozzi’s second go-round win in a row, having split the 10^th round at last year’s Finals with Angie Meadors. It was a fortunate outcome after her mount, Yeah Hes Firen (“Duke”), reared in the alley just before the run.

“He about took my head off,” Pozzi said. “He took off around the first barrel, and I thought he was going to miss it a little bit, but I kind of shook my reins at him, and he just inhaled it. If you get that first barrel here, it’s just like ‘Okay! Got it!’”

For Sears, the win is confirmation that her horse, Sugar Moon Express (“Martha”), is stronger than ever after getting injured at last year’s Finals.

“She was on cue and tight and zippy,” Sears said. “And the ground felt great. For the bottom of the ground, that’s the best I’ve ever felt it at the Thomas & Mack.”

Tammy Fischer and Easy Dash Oak (“Roundpen”) made a statement run of their own, claiming third place with a time of 14.05 seconds. Defending champion Sherry Cervi and MP Meter My Hay (“Stingray”) split fourth place with NFR rookie Jane Melby and RC Back In Black (“Beauty”) after both posted runs of 14.08, while Jeanne Anderson and Flaming Fire Bug earned the final paying spot with a 14.19.

Pozzi remains in the lead for the World Championship with $131,282.48 in 2011 earnings, still nearly $10,000 ahead of Sears.
