As September comes to an end, the barrel racing world has much to keep our eyes on, from the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings race for the National Finals Rodeo, as well as the start of futurity season. By this time in the year, most futurity trainers are making their final selections on young prospects for the beginning of their futurity year. With around a month left to get horses ready for the big futurity events such as the Barrel Futurities of America World Championships, it’s crunch time for competitors and for fans it’s time to get your webcasts and livestreams ready for some of the best barrel racing action of the year.

In The Futurity Issue, we take a look at how experts in the industry are taking care of business and how you can learn to navigate the industry as well. We dive into how to keep your futurity horse at peak performance in “Fit to Futurity” on page 32, written by Jessica Lash. Plus, on page 44, take a look at EquiStat’s exclusive statistical review, where the Lifetime Leading Futurity Horses, Riders, Owners, Breeders, Sires and Dams are highlighted.

We also pay a heartfelt farewell to EquiStat leading owner Michael Boone, who passed June 1 at the age of 59. Boone was renowned throughout the industry as one of barrel racing’s all-time leading owners, as well as a great horseman and asset to all who knew him. Read more about his life and legacy on page 38 in the beautifully written tribute by Tanya Randall. BHN sends our condolences to all Boone’s connections.

Even if futurity horses aren’t your passion, there’s plenty of quality content for your barrel racing endeavors — no matter what level or division — highlighted in this issue. Take a look at a common horse health condition in Abigail Boatwright’s “Unpacking PPID” on page 22. And, we conclude our Headgear How-To series on page 28 with Part Three, dedicated to the correct uses of German martingales and draw reins.

We also bring you highlights from the biggest events of the season, like the Calgary Stampede, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo, Royal Crown Futurity and Derby, The Big Bang Barrel Race, the Sherry Cervi Youth World Championships and more.

We hope you enjoy this issue. Be sure to stay up-to-date online at barrelhorsenews.com as BHN staff bring you the latest news, entertainment and training tips.

Until next time, stay safe.
