BARREL HORSE NEWS has always been dedicated to highlighting the industry across many different levels of competition, from youth to divisional riders to professionals and everyone in between. At the heart of barrel racing are the grassroots riders and horses who fill the entry lists week after week. They may not always stand in the national spotlight, but they represent the true spirit, strength and staying power of our sport. These competitors fuel our jackpots, support producers and raise the next generation of horsemen and -women, all while keeping traditions alive in every corner of the country.

This month, BHN is proud to honor those riders who are the backbone of our industry — the riders from 1D to 5D, Youth and Seniors. BHN showcases these memorable partnerships in our special 2025 EquiStat Divisional Statistical Review, which provides a snapshot of the current state of our industry, while showcasing leaders in the divisional ranks. These leaders serve as the foundation of our industry. The barrel racing industry paid out more than $55 million in 2025 — even though an outbreak of the equine herpesvirus cost the industry at least $2.5 million — with more than $ 30 million coming from divisional races.
The profiles of horses and riders within this Statistical Review showcase the diversity of players in barrel racing, from standout youth rider Dusky Lynn Hall to a retired coach on a borrowed family heirloom horse. There was big money to be earned in 2025, and divisional riders took advantage of those opportunities.
Beginning on page 26, the 2025 Divisional Profiles of the leading divisional horses and riders is a must-read. You’ll learn more about each division’s leading teams in the in-depth and inspiring profiles.
Along with the Statistical Review, this issue takes a special look at some non-orthopedic causes of poor condition in Tanya Randall’s article on page 20. Check out pro rodeo winner Acey Pinkston’s go-to drill for encouraging a horse to run straight lines on page 80. Plus, take a look at the industry’s most recent news in Arena Dirt and some fun, nutritious treats for your equine partner in Outside the Arena.
Don’t miss highlights from the biggest events of the season, like the Sandhills and National Western Stock Show Rodeos, Royal Crown Buckeye, Kinder Cup, WPRA Circuit Finals recap and more, all beginning on page 42.
