You might notice Barrel Horse News went through a streamlined facelift, adding a fresh look to our magazine. Not to worry, the updated fonts and design won’t interfere with our dedication to the industry or to our readers. It will, however, hopefully breathe new life into a product we are incredibly proud to put together for you each month.

I have to give a shoutout to BHN art director Susan Sampson — the vision behind the update. She’s been a part of the BHN team for 11 years and dutifully worked in 2023 to modernize the look of the magazine in a way that will enhance our content and continue to give life to the words. We hope that as you pore over the pages this month you’ll enjoy the updates, and we look forward to continuing our dedication to the industry in 2024.

Each year as the BHN staff is working to put together the January edition, we’re also spending part of our time between the premier events of the season — the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the Barrel Futurities of America World Championships and the OKC Futurity. As I’m writing this, I’m only days away from hitting the road to Las Vegas for the NFR, while managing editor Blanche Schaefer has recently returned from the BFA before she heads out again for the OKC Futurity.

By the time this issue hits your mailboxes, we’ll have already witnessed the crowning of champions in rodeo and aged events. Be watching for our February 2024 issue, where we delve deep into the newest WPRA World Champion and feature all the highlights from the Wrangler NFR and the OKC Futurity. You’ll find everything you need to know about the BFA in Blanche’s coverage in this issue on page 48.

The January issue is dedicated to stallions, and this month we dive deep into the benefits of outcrosses in Tanya Randall’s expertly written feature “Over and Out” beginning on page 30. Also, regular contributor Abigail Boatwright walks you through the dos and don’ts of DIY stallion photos and how you can do the best with your budget for you stallion’s marketing, beginning on page 38 in “Picture Perfect.”

You’ll also find the biggest shows of the season like the BFA World Championships, the WPRA World Finals, the NBHA Open and Senior World Championships and more.

We hope you enjoy this issue as you ring in the New Year. Be sure to stay up-to-date online at as BHN staff bring you the latest news, entertainment and training tips.

Until next time, stay safe.
