Put A Spring In Your Step

Spring is the time when a lot of us make sure our horses are up to date on all their yearly vaccinations and health protocols. It’s also a good time to evaluate our own health and fitness as riders. The health of our horses is always top of mind for us as horsemen, but sometimes we fail to focus on our own health. This month, Barrel Horse News caught up with Sarah Van Vuren of Barrel Racer Fit to share helpful tips and tricks to staying healthy and fit on the road. Check out her workout routine specifically designed for barrel racers, plus a few hacks for eating well while traveling. It begins on page 22 in Abigail Boatwright’s “Healthy As A Horse.”

Once you’ve dedicated some time to your own health, take time to make sure you’re doing your best for your equine partner. If we want to be the best, then our horses need to feel the best. That can be as simple as making sure their body and muscles are comfortable, or spotting something that might need further attention. Knowing the basics will give you a great headstart for recognizing if and when your horse’s health needs attention. On page 28, we dive into equine nutrition in Boatwright’s “Nutrition Basics,” where experts lay out the foundation of your horse’s dietary needs.

Plus, this month’s issue features a collection of health and nutrition products for your horse from select BHN advertisers in our Special Health and Nutrition Guide on page 36.

With summer rodeos right around the corner, BHN caught up with both veteran competitors and rookies as they hit the rodeo road. In BHN associate editor Maddy Rohr’s article “Chasing Rodeo Dreams,” these Women’s Professional Rodeo Association athletes share life lessons and rodeo insights, all beginning on page 18.

As always, we have all the highlights from the biggest events of the season beginning on page 42. From The American Rodeo to the WPRA world standings and the Northwest futurities, it’s all right here. Not to mention, we’ve hit the high points of events like the Senior World Championships, Barrel Bash Chickasha, Sanctuary High Cascades Benefit Barrel Race and the NBHA Jacksonville Super Show.

We hope you enjoy this issue. Be sure to stay up-to-date online at barrelhorsenews.com as BHN staff bring you the latest news, entertainment and training tips.

Until next time, stay safe.
