BECAUSE OF PRESS DEADLINES, I’m writing this in the first days of the New Year. While New Year’s Resolutions are top of mind for everyone during the first few months of the year, I can’t help but to reflect on Kassie Mowry’s second Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world championship. Against unforeseen challenges the all-time leading rider of barrel horses, proved yet again how she earned that distinction. In face of adversity Mowry stayed focused and didn’t falter in her game plan. While the pressure of attending the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo without her main mount would have sent other riders into a tailspin, Mowry did what she does best — centered her strategy around her horsemanship. It’s a reminder to all of us, that in difficult times, when our plans seem to be thrown out the window, if we concentrate on the fundamentals, we’ll be able to handle the hard times. Whether it’s with horses or in our everyday lives, staying centered and not catastrophizing an experience will keep us grounded and ultimately get us through any of life’s challenges.

It’s work ethic and horsemanship like Mowry’s that inspire me to not only be a better horseman, but a more focused and dedicated person in all aspects of life. I challenge you all this year to take on Mowry’s mindset of staying true to her goal in times of unexpected obstacles — I know I’ll be trying to have a mindset like Mowry.
