As athletes, we’re always looking for that something extra that puts us on top of the game. Yet, it’s often the little things that put you and your horse above the rest. Everyday habits like cleaning stalls, exercising or routine vet and farrier visits make the biggest difference in the long run. Horse care isn’t always glamorous. It’s early mornings, late nights and the daily dance of adjusting feed, monitoring turnout, checking hooves and watching for subtle signs that something might be off. This attentiveness is not optional — it’s essential. In a world where we’re asking our horses to perform at peak levels, we owe them nothing less than our full attention and informed care.

This month, we’re introducing a new themed issue — The Horse Care and Management Issue. It seems simple — everyday basics we should be implementing. That’s exactly why I’ve found this to be one of my favorite issues of the year. We’ll dive into the life of a horse owner and address topics that are paramount to success yet seemingly mundane.
The communication between veterinarian, farrier and owner can make all the difference for your horse’s overall health and performance. Don’t miss Maddy Rohr’s excellent article “Speaking the Same Language” on page 40. Rohr also caught up with health experts to take a deep dive into the new uses of cryotherapy in equine rehab and therapy in Your Horse’s Health on page 24.
Ross Hecox connected with two seasoned barrel racers to go over budget-friendly facility advancements to get you one step closer to your dream facility in “Affordable and Functional Facility” on page 36.
As we head into fall, we’ll be experiencing rain or snow that might bring on muddy conditions. In Abigail Boatwright’s “Managing the Mud” on page 28, we go over details for keeping your property in shape as well as protecting your horse from health conditions brought on by wet weather.
Fall brings cooler weather and the conclusion of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association season and the start of next year’s futurity season. It’s crunch time for competitors, and for fans it’s time to get your webcasts ready. Stay tuned at barrelhorsenews.com for all the action.
In this issue we also cover the biggest events of the season, such as the Calgary Stampede, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo, Royal Crown, The Big Bang, Sherry Cervi Youth World Championships and more.
We hope you enjoy this issue. Be sure to stay up-to-date online at www.barrelhorsenews.com as BHN staff bring you the latest news, entertainment and training tips in the industry.
Until next time, stay safe.
