San Antonio Rodeo Notable Moments

The San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo always brings fan-favorite action to center-stage offering early season opportunities for the barrel racers to earn checks and put money on the board.

Bracket Two saw three different winners on the top each round. It was round one winner LaTricia Duke, who stayed solid and placed in all three round to be the high-money earner of the bracket with $7,156 earned and a qualification to the Semifinals. Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi was close on her heels with $6,054 earned from a round two win and playing in all three as well.

Bracket Four’s biggest winner was Sharon Gow earning $4,404 from a fourth place finish in both the first and second rounds, and second place in the third round. A fan favorite moment in Bracket Four was seeing Anita Ellis back in the arena after injury and qualifying for the Semifinals.

On November 15, 2025, first-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier Ellis suffered a fall, striking her head on concrete. She was rushed to the hospital where scans revealed a small brain bleed, a few additional small bleeds and fractures to the right side of her face. She was placed in the ICU where she remained until November 25, 2025. Though on the road to recovery, due to the severity of her injuries, Ellis was not able to attend and compete at the 2025 NFR.

On February 20, 2026, Ellis was back in the saddle and ready to make her bid for a Semifinals qualification at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo. Aboard 2020 gelding SGL Rico (The Goodbye Lane x Version Blue x Winners Version) Ellis turned in a 14.43 in the first round, and a 14.27 in the second round for third place and second place, respectively. Ellis earned $3,853 in Bracket Four of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo and qualified for the Semifinals.

Michelle Alley was the big winner in Bracket Five earning $5,504 from winning the first and third rounds. Wenda Johnson picked up $4,954 for winning the second round and placing in the third and was therefore the second high-money earner of Bracket Five.

Anita Ellis and SGL Rico Win San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

The comeback story of the year is Anita Ellis. After she missed out on her first National Finals Rodeo qualification due to tan injury she suffered in November 2025, she was back in full-force at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo. Together with her Calgary Stampede champion SGL Rico, Ellis picked up $3,853 in bracket competition, followed that up with $4,403 from second place in Semifinal Two to advance to the Finals. Yet, she was the Finals round run that left all barrel racing fans on their feet and cheering for the Blackfoot, Idaho, cowgirl. Ellis and Rico turned in their best run of the week a 14.16 in the clean-slate Finals round to take home the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo Championship.

“It means so much to me. I’m so grateful to have my health enough to be here and all the prayers that have been said for me worked, so I appreciate everyone so much,” Ellis said during her on-air television interview on the Cowboy Channel following her winning run.
