Renowned youth event, Sherry Cervi Youth Championships attracted young stars of the barrel racing industry to Garwood Arena in Columbiana, Ohio August 2-4 hosted by Sherry Cervi and the event production team.
Georgiana Runyan and French Dashing Bogie (Frenchmans Bogie x Charge Card Gold x Gold and Hard Cash) stopped the clock in Round One with a 15.144 setting the pace for the fastest time of the weekend. Success did not stop there for the team. A 31.083 cumulative average time concreted the 1D Junior Average title.
“Six years ago, my mom took me to watch a local barrel race, and we ended up staying to watch the entire race. I was hooked,” Runyan said.
Runyan’s family purchased “Winnie” more than two years ago out of Kansas, and while Runyan instance found a connection with her, she admits she wasn’t sure if she’d have the speed needed to make a barrel horse.
“When we visited her in Kansas, even though we didn’t have a great run, I thought she was the most beautiful horse I had ever seen.” Runyan said. “She was a little, well a lot, lazy that day and I was worried that she wouldn’t be fast enough. My dad said we couldn’t pass her up. Boy, was I wrong about her not being fast enough.”
Avery Wolf and Striking Lil Bug (Striking Distance x Bugs Little Dasher x Dashing Val) topped the clock in the senior average with a 30.792 to take home their first trophy saddle. Wolf jockeyed the 2007 bay mare to win a total of $1,128 throughout the two-day event.
Wolf comes from a family with a rich history in the horse industry from race horses to barrel horses. Now, Wolf is carrying on that family tradition. Although Wolf and “Bugzy” didn’t initially hit it off, the two are finding their stride in the arena now.
“When I first got her, the horse I was running I needed to stay pretty handsy with and that is opposite of how I run Bugzy now. We did not get along whatsoever. Finally, I got a really good mare who taught me to throw my hand forward and let them do their job. That’s when we started back together on a clean slate and try again.”
“Knowing I am only 14 years old in a 13-to-18 age division competing with some people I know have had some pretty big wins really stands out. I have a mare that wants to win just as much as I do, and this was my first saddle I had ever won. It was a big deal. It was a big win not only for the title but knowing that I have this good mare in my back pocket that tries her hardest.”
