Denim and Glitter Fall Fashion, By Kathryn Barkey
September’s issue is special for me, because it’s our annual apparel issue. Each year I look forward to bringing you the newest fall fashions and trends in Western apparel. This year, we decided to have a little fun with our fashion shoot, and we took a trip west to California where we had the opportunity to shoot near Morro Bay with some amazing people!
I met Quincy Freeman last year at an apparel show, and before long while sitting in her booth we were planning a full-blown Barrel Horse News fashion shoot on the beach. Come April the following year it was a reality. Quincy set me up with her crew consisting of Tristan Twissleman – a photographer/videographer and most recently an X Games Medalist in The All Video Moto Contest; Jaime Holm owner of the Tinker Tin Trailer Co for the set of airstream trailers, and teepees; Quincy’s squad of cousins and friends who are a talented group of beautiful cowgirls and tough competitors on California’s high school rodeo scene; and finally Quincy’s mom, Sally Freeman, who brought a trailer of horses and a great sense of humor. This fashion shoot would have never happened without all these amazing people!
Fall Fashion Trends. Your new favorite jeans…
This fall, we have a few really cool styles of denim from some of our favorite Western brands I’m pretty excited about. Cowgirl Tuff has amazing new styles and washes that I can’t wait to get my hands on. New for Cowgirl Tuff is the “Just Tuff Jean” line featuring a classic dark wash and clean pockets. The best feature of all is the no-gap waistband. These new jeans are a dream! Kimes Ranch Apparel offers that “ranch cool” style with jeans fitting perfectly above the waist, in a solid dark wash and with a little embroidered flair on the pockets. They’re not reinventing the wheel, but rather staying true to classic cowboy styles. CRUEL Denim is bringing the heat this fall with designer looking skinny jeans. Seriously, they are amazing, and look like they should be on the racks at Nordstrom, with vintage washes that are flattering on your legs. Rock & Roll Cowgirl is right up there with them with a new mid-rise skinny in a great wash to roll up with booties this fall. Rock & Roll Cowgirl also has one of the best riding jeans around that fit nicely mid-waist, feel good around your thighs, and are figure flattering! They are by far one of my favorite mid-rise jeans for any occasion. Plus, I’m totally digging this new shift towards a good, clean, dark-wash with plain pockets – the clean classic denim is back.
We have come a long way in Western denim so I strongly encourage you to stop by your local retailer and try some of these new styles. Sometimes you need to do the legwork.
Last but not least, keep your eyes peeled on Wrangler. They have not only stepped up their game by offering new fashion styles for women in the form of skinny jeans, and retro bell-bottom flares, (and yes, they really do fit good…. I mean real good. These are not your dad’s Wranglers anymore) but they have also partnered with some leading fashion retailers like Urban Outfitters. Recently, the All-American brand partnered with Rodeo Quincy, a colorful tack and boot company, on a line of denim shirts, jackets, skirts, and retro rodeo shirts. Barrel Horse News was the first to feature the Rodeo Quincy/Wrangler line in our fall fashion spread!
Adding lots of sequin and sparkle….
These ladies are “Glamping” on the beautiful west coast with horses and airstream trailers after all – it just made sense to add lots of sparkle to our denim. We found a lot of great pieces like tulle skirts, fringe shorts, sequin leggings, and trendy jewelry at Envie Boutique in Visalia, California. Also, we were not on short supply of amazing jewelry from West & Co Jewelry, Al Zuni, XOXOart & Co, Sookie Sookie, Brit West, and Sunwest Silver.
A few more brands and trends to watch for this fall…
Three Palominos T-shirts, Nocona Boots, Roja Collection serape kimonos, Silverado Home serape kimonos, Liberty Black boots, YK Branded wedges and heels, The Bronte Collection clothing, Tasha Polizzi, Twisted X fringe snow boots, Noble Outfitters outwear, RESISTOL Sherry Cervi line of shirts, Rodeo Quincy tack, belts, and boots, Durango leather jackets and boots, and Lane Boots.
We hope you enjoy the 2016 Fall Fashion photo shoot and video as much as we had fun putting it together!
