Horse health might be one of the most intimidating aspects of being a horse owner. From general nutrition basics to conditioning practices and regular maintenance it’s a lot to keep track of, let alone if your horse requires specialized care or suffers an injury. Making sure your horse has everything it needs to be healthy and compete to the top tier of its ability can be overwhelming. Yet, it’s something we should never neglect. Small habits can make a big difference, and focusing on everyday disciplines, maintenance and prevention while keeping a tab on your horse’s health will help you and your horse in the long term. When specialized problems arise, it’s important you seek out reputable professionals to guide you in the right direction, but at least you can rest easy knowing you’ve done your part in your daily routine to keep small problems from turning into big issues.

In this month’s The Health and Nutrition Issue, we take a look at some of those specific horse health endeavors. While we’re taking care of our horses it’s important to remember to take care of ourselves as well, and our mental health is equally as important as our physical health. Charmayne James turned over the reins to Jenn Fields of Warrior Nation in this month’s “Ideas, Tips Chatter with Charmayne James” to discuss improving rider mental health. Give it a read beginning on page 14.
If you’re thinking about making the leap into the breeding side of the industry we’ve taken a deep dive into how to care for your broodmare’s joint health in Abigail Boatwright’s “Sound Mamas” beginning on page 36. While it’s built with the breeder in mind, it has applicable joint health advice for every horse owner.
