AS WINTER LOOSENS ITS GRIP on the horse world, there’s a familiar electricity humming through the barrel racing world. The pro rodeo season is underway, trailers are hitting the roads, colts are being legged up, and the industry turns its collective eye toward the horses and riders setting the pace at the top. This is a moment when our sport feels both cemented in tradition as well as wide open with possibility.
Barrel racing has long been dedicated to the horsepower in the industry, and the leading horses in today’s game are redefining what excellence looks like. The modern greats are not just fast, they are durable, intelligent and consistent across varying ground and setups. More and more, we are seeing horses transition from the futurity world to the professional rodeo scene and being expected to fire in indoor pens, small buildings and massive outdoor rodeo arenas. Their ability to handle pressure, travel and handle that repetition at peak performance has raised the bar across the industry.
Of course, the horses don’t stand alone. The riders at the top are shaping the sport just as powerfully. Today’s elite competitors are athletes in the fullest sense. They are students of the game and constantly working to refine their skills, horsemanship and mental fortitude. In this month’s issue we take the opportunity to admire such competitors
The March issue is the EquiStat Statistical Issue, where we’ve compiled our annual Horse, Rider, Owner, Breeder, Sire and Dam statistics, beginning on page 28. While 2025 saw an equine herpes virus outbreak that cancelled several of the premier events of the year, the 2025 season still finished with an abundance in earnings. Highlighting the EquiStat leaders of 2025 helps us tell the story of the sport by the numbers. They represent the hard work that goes into building a successful career in the barrel racing world, be it as a trainer, owner, breeder or event producer. We hope these charts help celebrate the year’s leaders and all the work that happens long before the spotlight ever hits them. Congratulations to everyone who made the list, and to all of you who continue raising the bar in the industry.
