A barrel racer's guide tack and equipment issue

This month, Barrel Horse News explores every topic a barrel racer could dream of, from horse health to special tributes to tack and equipment basics and everything in between. It’s a barrel racer’s guide to the sport, and the staff, and the staff here at BHN are excited for you to dive into all the details.

In associate editor Maddy Rohr’s wonderfully told profile on Maggie Wright, we get to know how Wright’s battle with cancer changed the trajectory of her life as well as opened opportunities she didn’t know were available prior to her cancer diagnosis. It’s a must-read in this issue, beginning on page 18.

We also say goodbye to legendary breeder Mel Potter on page 26. Through excerpts from a 2020 Western Horseman feature, readers get the opportunity to learn how Potter inevitably changed the barrel racing industry through his love of pedigrees and with Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world champion daughter Sherry Cervi as inspiration.

The Tack and Equipment Issue has something for everyone, diving into all the details surrounding the equipment we use. A barrel racer’s equipment is vital to their success, but more than that, it’s important to use the correct tools to communicate with our horses.

On page 32, use expert tips and advice to choose the right leg protection for your horse in Abigail Boatwright’s “Boot ‘Em Up.” Then, learn the basics of arena grooming on page 36. No matter if you’re a rider looking to stand out or simply upgrade your style, check out Katie Navarra’s guide to perfecting your look in the barrel racing arena in “Saddle Up In Style” on page 40.

Plus, on page 46, Barrel Horse News advertisers showcase fun and functional tack and equipment products in the Special Tack and Equipment Guide.

Spring is in full swing, and from rodeos to jackpots, the industry is buzzing. Don’t miss your opportunity to hit the road and enjoy time with your horse.

As always, this issue brings you coverage from the biggest events of the season like the Fort Worth and San Antonio Stock Show Rodeos, The Patriot, Elite Extravaganza, and the Dixie Classic-Konra Minniear Memorial, all beginning on page 52.

We hope you enjoy this issue. Be sure to stay up-to-date online at barrelhorsenews.com as BHN staff bring you the latest news, entertainment and training tips in the industry.

Until next time, stay safe.
